EBU Issues Guidelines for Respectful Coverage of Women Athletes

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has issued new best practice guidelines for covering female athletes during broadcasts. Titled "Raising the Bar: Guidelines for Respectful Media Coverage in Women’s Athletics," the 23-page document was developed in collaboration with athletes Holly Bradshaw, Ivana Španović, and Blanka Vlašić.

The directives aim to address the sexualization of women athletes that can result from selective camera angles and editing. "How our sport is displayed during live broadcast can be incredibly powerful yet sometimes harmful to the women competing and the women/girls watching," Bradshaw stated in the report. She cited personal experiences of social media abuse and witnessing inappropriate videos of herself and colleagues.

The guidelines provide animated examples of various camera shots, offering recommended and cautionary versions. For instance, for high jump, wide angles featuring athletes running are encouraged, while low camera angles from beneath are flagged as problematic.

"These choices carry profound implications. They shape audience perception by diverting attention from the remarkable achievements and technical skills of women athletes, and risk perpetuating harmful stereotypes," said Glen Killane, Executive Director, EBU Sports.

The new guidelines have gained traction on social media, with some users criticizing the regulations. However, others argue that the reactions highlight the continued need for such directives, even after years of activism in women's sports.
