EcoGPT Promotes Energy-Efficient AI Models and Reforestation Initiative
EcoGPT aims to mitigate the environmental impact of large-scale AI by utilizing smaller open-source models and funding reforestation based on user engagement.

As concerns over the environmental footprint of artificial intelligence increase, startups are looking for ways to reduce the energy consumption associated with large language models. EcoGPT, founded by 20-year-old Ethan Leonard, provides an AI assistant powered by smaller, open-source models as an alternative to large-scale data center-dependent systems. The platform operates on a model that funds the planting of one tree for every 100 user interactions.
The International Energy Agency has projected that AI-driven electricity demand could reach 945 terawatt-hours by 2030, highlighting the strain on global power grids. To address this, EcoGPT has incorporated as a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC) in Delaware, a legal structure that requires the company to balance shareholder profit with specified public and environmental benefits.
Six months after its initial launch, the company reports a user base exceeding five million, with 435,000 trees planted to date. The startup has set a target of planting one million trees by 2027 as it continues to compete with larger, more energy-intensive AI providers.
