Ecosia Replaces Mistral AI with Open-Weight Models, Cuts Costs
Search engine Ecosia is switching from Mistral AI models to open-weight alternatives including Qwen, GLM, and Kimi, through a partnership with Melious. The change has reportedly halved costs and improved performance.

German search engine Ecosia has announced a transition away from Mistral AI models to a suite of open-weight artificial intelligence models. The new models include Qwen, GLM, and Kimi, developed in part by Chinese firms. This shift is facilitated through a partnership with the German AI platform Melious.
Ecosia's Founder and CEO Christian Kroll stated that the move has approximately halved the company's AI operational costs while simultaneously enhancing quality and performance metrics. The company had previously adopted Mistral models in May, moving from solutions provided by OpenAI.
Kroll cited recurring technical issues with the Mistral models, such as overloaded servers, and expressed disappointment with the overall model quality. The new arrangement with Melious provides Ecosia with access to multiple AI models, diversifying its dependencies rather than relying on a single developer.
This strategic pivot by Ecosia aligns with a growing industry trend towards leveraging open-source AI technologies. Such models offer greater flexibility and potential cost efficiencies compared to proprietary AI solutions, allowing companies to tailor their AI infrastructure more precisely.
