EIB Trains Over 40 African Venture Capital Fund Managers in Oxford

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has completed the fifth Africa Venture Finance Programme (AVFP) at Oxford University’s Saïd Business School, bringing together over 40 African and Africa-focused venture capital fund managers.

The programme, held from September 21-25, 2026, aims to strengthen investors backing early- and growth-stage technology companies across Africa. Participants received academic instruction, practical experience, and opportunities for confidential peer exchange.

Following this year's edition, the AVFP alumni network now includes more than 200 fund managers from 20 countries and 80 venture capital firms. The initiative addresses the persistent financing challenge for African entrepreneurs, with many businesses struggling to access sufficient capital for scaling.

Andrew McDowell, Director General of EIB Global, highlighted the crucial role of fund managers in turning the potential of African companies into investable businesses. "AVFP strengthens the investment professionals who can help companies secure capital and scale their operations," McDowell stated.

The programme was delivered through technical assistance facilities supported by the European Commission, EIB Advisory, KfW, and Germany's BMZ. Alongside the programme, the EIB and European Commission confirmed the launch of a successor initiative, Boost Ventures in Africa, backed by a €129 million guarantee and €4.5 million in technical assistance funding.
