EIF and SP Growth Partners Back Alternative Financing for Finnish Innovation-Led Companies

The European Investment Fund (EIF) has committed €20 million to SP Growth Fund Ky, a newly established Finnish private credit fund designed to provide growth financing to domestic small and medium-sized businesses. This commitment helped the fund achieve its first closing at €34 million, positioning it over two-thirds of the way towards its target size of €50 million. Initial investors also include Finnish institutional and private investors. Managed by SP Growth Partners Oy, the fund will focus exclusively on Finnish companies, including small mid-caps, that have strong commercial potential but may face difficulties securing financing through traditional bank channels. The fund is expected to provide loans ranging from €500,000 to €2 million, with a particular focus on technology-driven businesses that have limited tangible assets. Supported by the InvestEU programme, this initiative aims to diversify funding sources for innovative Finnish businesses, strengthen the country’s private credit market, and support investment, expansion, job creation, and European competitiveness. Fund managers highlighted that many Finnish growth companies possess healthy business models and ambitious plans but are finding it increasingly difficult to obtain financing. The EIF's role as an anchor investor, alongside backing from a broad group of Finnish institutional and private investors, provides a strong foundation for the fund’s launch. This initiative addresses a growing need for alternative growth financing in Finland, where stricter banking regulation has made access to conventional lending more challenging for some businesses. The SP Growth Fund aims to provide flexible capital that allows companies to invest, expand, and create jobs. The fund is expected to help close part of the financing gap faced by Finnish companies as they move from early commercial development towards larger-scale growth. The EIF is part of the European Investment Bank Group and focuses on improving access to finance for European small businesses and startups through guarantees, securitisation, and equity investments.
