Eight-Year Project Tracking Brachvögel Birds Concludes in Bavaria

The Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz in Bayern (LBV), a Bavarian nature conservation organization, has announced the completion of an eight-year satellite telemetry project dedicated to studying the Eurasian Curlew (Brachvogel).

The project, running from 2017 to 2024, was designed to gather crucial data on the birds' migratory behavior, wintering grounds, and habitat requirements. This research is intended to inform and enhance conservation strategies for the species, which faces various environmental pressures.

Recent updates from LBV indicated that all tracked birds had departed from their wintering areas by early 2024, commencing their spring migration. The organization has also documented the return of younger birds to breeding grounds across Bavarian meadows.

Information collected through the GPS tracking provided valuable insights into the curlews' long-distance journeys. LBV stated that the findings have contributed to developing new conservation measures and a better understanding of the curlew's ecological needs.
