El Niño Forecast Predicts Wetter Winter for Parts of U.S.

Forecasters from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have issued their winter outlook, signaling that a strong El Niño is expected to bring significantly more precipitation to approximately half of the United States.

The 2023-2024 U.S. Winter Outlook map highlights the likelihood of wetter-than-average conditions across the Southwest, South, and East Coast. Parts of Florida are forecast to experience 70-80% above-normal precipitation. The storm track is expected to shift southward and eastward, leading to more active weather patterns in these regions.

This increased rainfall could alleviate drought conditions in the Southwest and Southern Plains. However, officials caution that excessive precipitation on dry soil can lead to destructive flash floods and mudslides, urging communities to prepare for potential hazards. California's governor has already declared a state of emergency in anticipation of heavy rains and strong winds.

Conversely, drier-than-average conditions are forecast for parts of the northern Rockies, Great Lakes, and central Alaska. Forecasters warn that drought conditions may develop or worsen in these areas, including parts of Oregon and Washington. NOAA has also launched a Probabilistic Precipitation Portal for users to track detailed snow and rain forecasts.

While El Niño influences probabilities, specific outcomes are not guaranteed. Meteorologists will continue to update forecasts as the season progresses. The NOAA portal offers an interactive way to view low-end, expected, and high-end precipitation amounts over 72-hour periods.
