Election-linked event contracts boost third-quarter financial results

As U.S. voters head to the polls, financial firms are reporting increased activity in prediction markets tied to midterm election outcomes. Recent third-quarter filings show that trading platforms and data providers are capturing substantial interest from market participants hedging or speculating on political shifts.

Robinhood Markets reported its event contract revenue reached $173 million for the third quarter, a sixfold increase year-over-year. The firm facilitated 16.4 billion contracts through its prediction hub, contributing to an overall rise in transaction-based revenues. Similarly, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) reported a 15% increase in net revenue to $2.8 billion, noting its approximately $2 billion stake in Polymarket, a platform that tracks probabilities across political and cultural events.

The industry faces a complex regulatory landscape. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is currently challenging efforts by various U.S. states to block prediction markets, asserting that it holds sole federal authority to regulate these venues. While the legal framework remains in flux, the financial data confirms that these products have become a material component of the quarterly performance for major exchanges and brokerages.
