Electric Plant Co. Launches AI Sensor to Interpret Botanical Electrical Signals

Electric Plant Co. emerged from stealth this week, announcing $11.2 million in seed funding to develop a sensory device capable of monitoring plant health. The handheld hardware, dubbed 'Bud,' attaches to plants via two probes to detect electrochemical signals produced in response to external conditions like hydration and heat stress.

The device utilizes a proprietary AI model named 'Bombadil,' which was trained on 4 million hours of electrical data harvested from over 1,400 plant species, including commercial crops like almond trees and tomatoes. By interpreting these signals, the company aims to provide agricultural and forestry sectors with real-time insights into physiological stress markers, such as photosynthetic efficiency.

CEO Justin Mast, who previously founded Bloomscape, stated that the technology functions by tapping into the natural electrochemical processes plants use to coordinate physical responses to their environment. By quantifying these signals, the company seeks to assist growers in optimizing water and nutrient usage, potentially mitigating the impact of rising operational costs and climate change.

The startup enters a competitive landscape of plant-monitoring technology. Other firms, such as the Swiss-based Vivent Biosignals, have also reported significant deployments of AI-driven plant diagnostic tools. Electric Plant Co. intends to use its funding to scale the adoption of this technology as a means of improving crop management through direct plant data.
