Elizabeth Holmes to Transfer to Halfway House in Texas Next Summer

Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the defunct blood-testing company Theranos, who was convicted of defrauding investors, is scheduled to move from federal prison to a halfway house near Austin next summer. Holmes has been approved for placement at the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle, Texas, effective August 23, 2027, according to a September 22 letter from the Federal Bureau of Prisons sent to victims.

Holmes is currently serving her sentence at a minimum-security federal prison camp for women in Bryan, Texas. The move to a halfway house will grant her more freedom within a supervised environment designed to help inmates transition back into the community. Residents can work outside the facility and receive services like job counseling, but their movements are closely monitored.

Holmes was sentenced in 2022 to 11 years and three months in prison after being found guilty of wire fraud and conspiracy related to Theranos. The company, which Holmes founded at age 19, falsely claimed to possess revolutionary blood-testing technology.

In March of this year, a federal judge approved a one-year reduction in Holmes' sentence due to a retroactive change in federal sentencing guidelines. The judge noted that this reduction does not diminish the severity of Holmes' crimes or the significant negative impact her actions had on victims.
