Elon Musk Accuses 'Monopolistic Oligarchs' of Blocking Starlink in India

Elon Musk, founder of Starlink's parent company SpaceX, has accused Indian entities of obstructing the launch of the satellite internet service in the country. Musk posted on X that 'certain oligarchs' are blocking Starlink's operations to maintain their "monopolistic chokehold on the Indian people," calling the situation a "crime against the people of India."

India's Press Bureau of Information (PIB) has refuted Musk's claims. The agency stated that a fair and non-discriminatory authorization framework is in place for all telecommunication services, including satellite communications. The PIB emphasized that licensees must comply with security conditions to ensure user safety and data protection, deeming suggestions of unfair or discriminatory practices "baseless and misconceived."

Musk's statements have drawn reactions from Indian politicians. Former Telangana IT Minister K.T. Rama Rao urged Musk to identify the alleged oligarchs. Former Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi suggested that claims of telecom monopolies blocking Starlink might be misplaced, given the company's planned partnerships with major Indian telecom players Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Chaturvedi also raised concerns about the affordability of Starlink's services for rural Indian populations.

Starlink is awaiting final regulatory clearance to commence commercial operations in India. While it has secured certain approvals, including a GMPCS license and authorization from IN-SPACe, final security clearances are pending. SpaceX has stated that its infrastructure in India is ready, comprising 20 gateway sites.
