Elon Musk addresses thermal management challenges for space-based AI data centers

Elon Musk has proposed a technical approach for cooling space-based data centers, countering expert concerns regarding thermal radiation in a vacuum.

4 November 2026

Elon Musk has responded to criticisms surrounding the feasibility of operating AI data centers in orbit. The core concern raised by experts, including Professor Jan Broersen of Utrecht University, is that the vacuum of space lacks air convection, making thermal dissipation difficult and relying entirely on radiation.

Musk contends that aluminum heat sinks oriented away from the sun toward deep space can achieve a heat radiation capacity of approximately 1,300 watts per square meter. By positioning the hardware to minimize solar heat gain, Musk argues that the thermal load generated by high-density computing can be successfully managed.

Industry observers remain cautious, noting that these figures are theoretical and lack in-orbit verification. While OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously suggested that space-based computing remains a long-term prospect rather than an immediate solution for the 2020s, the technical debate highlights the significant infrastructure hurdles required for extraterrestrial data processing.
