Elon Musk sues German state over content removal order

The social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has initiated legal action against the German state of Lower Saxony. The core of the dispute centers on a regulatory order that mandates the removal of a specific post from the platform.

The issue arose from a post by Stefan Homburg, a former economics professor at the University of Hannover, during the 2024 European Football Championship. Homburg published the phrase "Alles für Deutschland" ("Everything for Germany"), which authorities contend is a slogan associated with the Nazi-era SA paramilitary group, despite Homburg's claims it was a common phrase. A court subsequently fined Homburg in 2025.

Lower Saxony's media authority issued a formal notice to X, demanding the deletion of Homburg's post. X is challenging this order, arguing that the post is protected by freedom of speech and that the authority should have first approached the user directly. A hearing is currently underway, with a verdict expected later this afternoon.

This legal challenge highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the responsibilities of social media platforms in moderating user-generated content and their role in political discourse.
