Elon Musk to make X platform's entire codebase open source next month

Elon Musk has announced that X, the social media platform he owns, will make its entire system codebase open source starting next month. Musk stated on the platform that "complete transparency is the only way to earn trust."

The plan, announced via a post on X, indicates that all code related to X's systems will be open for inspection by third-party auditors. This initiative signifies a substantial push towards greater platform transparency. Previously, Musk had overseen gradual releases of certain X code, including its recommendation algorithm.

In 2023, X released some of the code that determines tweet ranking. In 2024, the platform opened up parts of its content moderation tools to external scrutiny. This latest move, however, aims to open up the broader technical infrastructure rather than isolated components.

According to Musk, after internal security reviews are complete, X will release its full code library. Independent third parties will be invited to verify that the publicly available code matches the live operational version. This level of openness is rarely seen among major social media companies.

Many prominent social media platforms maintain their core infrastructure code as proprietary. For instance, Meta has open-sourced some AI models but keeps its underlying social platform architecture and recommendation systems closed. The full implementation of X's plan could set a new precedent for transparency standards across the industry.
