Emotionally Intelligent People Use 3 Words to Turn Anxiety and Stress Into Confidence

Psychological research reveals that emotionally intelligent individuals utilize a simple three-word strategy to convert stress and anxiety into positive self-assurance and determination.

According to research described by Marc Brackett in his book "Permission to Feel," the ability to accurately identify the cause of emotions is linked to better emotional regulation and the capacity to find positive meaning in negative experiences. Individuals who can specify their feelings ('granular') react less intensely to stress compared to those who experience emotions more broadly ('clumpers').

The granular individuals demonstrated a greater ability to regulate their emotions to achieve desired outcomes and experienced fewer physical and psychological ailments. The clumpers, conversely, suffered more frequently.

The strategy begins with accurately identifying the emotion. Instead of simply stating 'I am stressed,' emotionally intelligent people aim to specify exactly what the worry or fear stems from. This more precise identification helps in managing the emotion more effectively, both mentally and physically.

The principle can also be applied to others. By helping an individual who describes themselves as 'upset' or 'anxious' to more accurately identify the cause and the emotion itself, their ability to manage the situation can be improved.
