Employee contributions to family health premiums outpace total cost increases
Inc. Magazine reports that worker contributions toward family health coverage rose by 9 percent in 2026, nearly double the 5 percent increase in total premiums.

In 2026, the average annual worker contribution toward family health benefits reached $7,471, reflecting a 9 percent increase over the previous year. Data from KFF indicates that while total employer-sponsored family premiums rose by 5 percent to $28,303, the financial burden shifted to employees is growing at a significantly faster rate.
Employers have traditionally absorbed the majority of premium hikes to maintain competitive benefits and support retention. However, sustained increases in healthcare costs have forced firms to shift a larger portion of these expenses to staff to remain budget-conscious.
This shift manifests not only in higher premium contributions but also through narrowing provider networks and increased deductibles. This trend places further pressure on employee purchasing power at a time when wage growth remains moderate.
