Employees Expect Consumer Shopping Experience for Benefits

Employees are increasingly evaluating workplace benefits like consumers assessing purchases, rather than simply selecting employer-provided perks. This shift necessitates that companies rethink their approach to benefits communication and administration throughout the year.

A New York Life survey found that most employees view benefits as a source of short-term value rather than long-term life cycle needs. Consequently, businesses must consider how to effectively market and facilitate enrollment in suitable coverage options, mirroring consumer product sales strategies.

The study revealed that 71 percent of employees evaluate the value of voluntary benefits, a figure rising to 83 percent among Gen Z. Given current economic pressures, only two-thirds have explored supplemental coverage beyond standard open enrollment offerings.

Companies face the challenge of meeting these consumer-like expectations. Simply reminding employees of benefits' importance as workplace support is insufficient. Organizations need to adapt their communication strategies and administrative processes to reflect the demands for transparency, flexibility, and ease of use that employees expect when choosing and utilizing benefits.
