Employees Say CEOs Lack Transparency on AI Impact

A substantial gap exists between chief executive officers' confidence in employee trust and employees' actual trust, particularly concerning the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), according to new research from Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

The study found that four in ten employees believe their CEO has not been transparent enough regarding AI's implications for their jobs and career paths. This perception gap is concerning given that nearly 90% of CEOs surveyed expressed confidence in their employees' overall trust in their leadership, a sentiment shared by only 46% of employees.

BCG's research, which surveyed 645 CEOs and a larger number of non-executive employees, also highlighted that only 15% of CEOs are concerned about their AI transformation approach potentially eroding employee trust. The findings suggest that increased transparency around AI could boost employee engagement, as employees who feel their trust has grown are significantly more likely to go above and beyond at work.

Beyond AI, the research indicated that 34% of CEOs have considered stepping down in the past six months, with this figure rising to over 40% for leaders of the largest companies. Reasons cited included seeking better health, more family time, and improved work-life balance. Furthermore, nearly 60% of CEOs plan to replace a member of their C-suite within the next six months, suggesting potential shifts in senior leadership.
