Environmental Group Halts McDonald's Misleading Climate Claims

The environmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) has succeeded in stopping the fast-food chain McDonald's from making misleading claims about achieving climate neutrality by 2050. DUH argued that McDonald's website promotions lacked concrete plans and sufficient measures to support this ambitious environmental goal.

Following a written request from DUH, McDonald's updated its website information. However, the company did not provide assurances against repeating such claims. Consequently, DUH filed a lawsuit, which McDonald's has now acknowledged. The Regional Court of Munich I (Landgericht München I) issued a consent judgment.

DUH's managing director, Jürgen Resch, stated that the company's climate promises were inconsistent with its business model, which involves significant meat consumption and single-use packaging. He urged McDonald's to implement substantial emission reduction measures and called for transparency and independent verification of sustainability pledges.

This court decision reinforces consumer protection and fair competition standards, ensuring that corporate sustainability claims are backed by verifiable actions rather than mere "greenwashing." DUH continues to monitor such claims across the industry.
