EOS Group: 29% Prefer Handling Sensitive Banking Matters with AI

The growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in European banking is highlighted by the latest 'EOS Banking AI Barometer' study from EOS Group. The research indicates that 46% of European consumers report an improvement in their bank's customer communication thanks to AI assistance. Only 11% perceive a decline in service quality.

A notable portion of consumers, 29%, state a preference for interacting with AI rather than a human representative when discussing sensitive financial matters. This figure rises to 38% among younger individuals aged 18 to 34. However, the study notes limitations in AI's ability to fully comprehend customer needs and resolve issues effectively, with only about a third trusting AI's capabilities in these areas.

Despite 60% of respondents missing the human touch, the practical benefits of AI, such as faster information retrieval and constant availability, are widely valued. Marwin Ramcke, CEO of EOS Group, commented that while AI enhances services, it does not replace human interaction. The most successful banks leverage AI as a tool to augment, not substitute, personal relationships.

Consumers also see potential for AI in proactive financial services. 61% wish for AI to alert them to potential overdrafts, and 51% would appreciate AI suggesting payment plans for outstanding debts. Customers with a history of payment difficulties show a greater openness to AI-driven banking assistance, suggesting a shift towards AI acting as a proactive financial advisor rather than just a reactive information provider.
