EOS Study: AI Improves Bank Communication, But Consumers Miss Human Touch

Hamburg, Germany – European consumers increasingly view artificial intelligence (AI) positively in their banking interactions, according to the latest EOS Banking AI Barometer study.

The study found that 46 percent of European consumers report an improvement in their bank's communication due to AI implementation, with only 11 percent experiencing a decline. Notably, 29 percent would even prefer to discuss sensitive financial issues with an AI rather than a human representative, a sentiment shared by 38 percent of those aged 18-34.

However, the research highlights limitations in AI's current capabilities regarding understanding, precision, and problem-solving, with approval ratings between 35-36 percent. AI's strengths are more apparent in information retrieval, speed, and availability, with 54 percent appreciating its help in finding information and 51 percent valuing faster communication and 24/7 accessibility.

Despite these benefits, a significant 60 percent of respondents miss the interpersonal element in AI-driven communication. Marwin Ramcke, CEO of EOS Group, stated, "While 46 percent of customers say service has improved with AI, the 60 percent who miss the human element tell us AI alone is not the answer. The best banks use AI as a tool for better service, not as a replacement for relationships."

Consumers see further potential for AI in proactive financial guidance. 61 percent desire alerts for potential overdrafts, and 51 percent find AI-generated proposals for individual payment plans helpful. Individuals with past payment difficulties are particularly open to AI-assisted banking services. The study surveyed 4,400 bank customers across eleven European countries in July 2026.
