Gothenburg-based Epicyt Pharma AB has reported positive topline results from its Phase 1/2a first-in-human study of BAFA. The study focused on patients who have undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery.

The study demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in urinary calcium excretion, alongside improvements in key biomarkers for calcium homeostasis. Based on these findings, Epicyt is preparing to advance BAFA into Phase 2b development.

Epicyt Pharma is developing therapies for impaired intestinal calcium uptake. The company stated that the BAFA study showed its potential to improve calcium metabolism in patients with specific post-digestive surgery complications.

The company is now preparing for the next stage of BAFA's development, marking a forward step in its drug development pipeline.
