Epidemic Sound provides technical guidance for video audio mixing
Music licensing platform Epidemic Sound has released a guide on optimizing audio levels to improve clarity and balance in digital video production.

Epidemic Sound, in collaboration with filmmaker Ben Hess, has published technical guidance for content creators regarding audio level management in video editing. The focus of the guide is to mitigate common issues such as audio distortion and masking, where music volume overshadows dialogue.
The core methodology recommended involves setting dialogue levels at approximately -12 dB, with music volume adjusted accordingly. By utilizing built-in audio mixing tools, creators are advised to use automated leveling and ducking functions to keep the overall project output below the -6 dB threshold, preventing digital clipping and distortion.
The guide emphasizes the reliance on digital audio meters over subjective monitoring through speakers, which can be affected by acoustic environments. It highlights that technical accuracy is best achieved by balancing tracks within software and verifying the final output on multiple playback devices, including mobile phones and consumer televisions.
