Epiroc introduces 6th Sense for mining and infrastructure

Epiroc has launched 6th Sense, a new concept designed to boost productivity for its mining and infrastructure industry customers by integrating digitalization and automation. The approach aims to optimize client processes by connecting machines, systems, and people through automation, information management, and system integration.

The core of 6th Sense lies in system connectivity and interoperability, which seeks to unlock the full potential of automation for increased production and reduced operating costs. Helena Hedblom, Epiroc's Senior Executive Vice President for Mining and Infrastructure, stated that 6th Sense provides a significant advantage by enabling real-time tracking and response to working conditions and equipment needs.

A prime example of Epiroc's focus on automation and productivity is its collaboration with Newmont Goldcorp at the Hollinger mine in Canada. Here, the world's first fully autonomous surface drill rig, the SmartROC D65, has been put into production. The rig can autonomously complete a drilling pattern while the operator works remotely, enhancing safety and boosting productivity through precision and continuous operation.

Another notable development is the Teleremote e-tramming option for Epiroc's Simba long-hole underground drill rigs. This automation package allows for monitoring, planning, and automating drilling operations either on-board the rig or from a remote location. The feature not only simplifies and speeds up tramming but also enhances worker safety and reduces performance variability.
