Epiroc secures largest ever digital solutions order from Codelco in Chile
Epiroc has received its largest-ever order for digital solutions from Chilean mining company Codelco. The multi-year contract for the El Teniente copper mine aims to enhance safety and productivity.
Epiroc, a supplier of mining and construction equipment and services, has won a multi-year order for digital solutions from Codelco, the world's largest copper producer. The contract, valued at approximately SEK 250 million (about $24 million USD), is Epiroc's largest deal to date for digital technologies and will be implemented at Codelco's El Teniente mine in Chile.
The agreement will see Epiroc deploy a suite of digital solutions designed to optimize fleet management, ore production, and provide real-time visibility of personnel and machinery underground. The systems are also intended to prevent vehicle collisions and improve overall operational efficiency at both underground and open-pit operations.
The five-year project's initial phase, valued at roughly SEK 50 million (approximately $4.8 million USD), was booked in the fourth quarter of 2023. The contract highlights the increasing importance of digitalization in the mining sector for improving safety and productivity.
Helena Hedblom, Epiroc's President and CEO, stated that digital solutions are crucial for mining companies to achieve their full potential. "Codelco has long been on the technological forefront, and we are happy to continue to support them as they further enhance their digitalization," she said, emphasizing the goal of ensuring operator safety and maximum operational efficiency.
Through this order, Codelco will upgrade its existing digital infrastructure and implement new features, including a collision avoidance system and capabilities for collecting machine performance data. This initiative represents a significant step in Codelco's ongoing digital transformation journey.
