Epiroc to Use Fossil-Free Steel from SSAB in Mining Equipment
Epiroc, a company serving the mining and infrastructure industries, is partnering with steelmaker SSAB to procure fossil-free steel for its mining equipment production.
Epiroc has entered into a partnership agreement with SSAB, a steel manufacturer, to secure fossil-free steel for use in the production of its mining equipment. This collaboration aims to reduce the carbon footprint associated with Epiroc's operations.
The steel will initially be used to produce a prototype underground machine at Epiroc's facility in Örebro, Sweden. The company plans to increase its use of the sustainable material over time as it works towards its goal of halving CO2e emissions by 2030.
SSAB is developing fossil-free steel through the HYBRIT initiative, which replaces traditional coking coal with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen in the steelmaking process. This method significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions. SSAB expects to deliver fossil-free steel on a commercial scale starting in 2026.
Epiroc's President and CEO, Helena Hedblom, stated that sustainability is integral to the company's strategy and that this partnership will support its ambitious climate goals. SSAB's President and CEO, Martin Lindqvist, welcomed Epiroc as a partner, highlighting the growing demand for fossil-free steel and SSAB's accelerated green transition.
