Epiroc wins large order for mining equipment in Democratic Republic of Congo
Swedish company Epiroc has secured a significant order for mining equipment from contractor JCHX Mining and Construction Ltd. for an underground mine reopening in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Epiroc, a company specializing in mining and infrastructure equipment, has received a substantial order for machinery from JCHX Mining and Construction Ltd. The equipment is destined for the Kipushi mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is currently undergoing a reopening process.
The Kipushi mine, located in the Haut-Katanga province, is set to resume operations after being closed since 1994. Construction to re-open the mine began last year, with production targeted for late 2024. The mine is known for its deposits of zinc, copper, germanium, and silver.
The order, valued at approximately USD 17 million and booked in the first quarter of 2023, includes several Epiroc loaders, mine trucks, and drill rigs. These units are equipped with Epiroc's telematics system for real-time performance monitoring and are prepared for automation and remote control.
Delivery of the equipment, manufactured in Sweden, will commence shortly and continue into early 2024. The Kipushi mine is owned by Kipushi Corporation, a joint venture between Ivanhoe Mines and the state-owned mining company Gécamines. The mine will be powered by renewable hydroelectricity.
