EQT Group Highlights Importance of Fiber Internet Expansion
Investment firm EQT Group is emphasizing the growing necessity of fiber internet and the need to expand its availability across the U.S.

Investment firm EQT Group has highlighted the critical role of fiber internet in modern society, underscoring its importance for access to education, employment, and healthcare.
EQT notes that nearly half of U.S. households still lack access to fiber internet, despite its advantages over cable in terms of speed, reliability, and security. The firm views the expansion of fiber infrastructure as a significant investment opportunity with the potential for positive societal impact.
The absence of reliable fiber connections can substantially limit opportunities for remote learning, work-from-home arrangements, and telehealth services. A case where a newborn premature baby could not be discharged from the hospital without a fast, reliable internet connection for remote monitoring illustrates this point. "It's becoming such a differentiator," said Nirav Shah, a partner at EQT.
The demand for fiber internet has accelerated since the pandemic, driven by the rise of remote work, online education, and telehealth. While cable remains the most common internet type in the U.S., fiber is considered the next evolutionary step. Investment firms like EQT, Apollo, and KKR are acquiring fiber internet providers, and governments are supporting infrastructure deployment, particularly in underserved rural areas.
EQT-owned Lumos has significantly expanded its fiber network, connecting approximately 115,000 new homes in 2023, an increase from around 15,000 in 2021. Lumos anticipates continued rapid growth. The firm leverages its long-term investment approach and contributes operational expertise to the sector.
