EQT announced in May 2023 that its EQT Infrastructure VI fund has agreed to acquire a 60 percent stake in a newly formed entity that will own and operate the mobile and fixed network infrastructure of Italian telecom provider Wind Tre. The transaction values the new company at EUR 3.4 billion. CK Hutchison, Wind Tre's current owner, will retain a 40 percent stake.

The new company will function as an independent wholesale connectivity provider for Wind Tre and other Italian mobile operators, positioning itself as the country's largest provider of mobile network coverage and capacity. As of the end of 2022, the network offered 5G coverage to approximately 67 percent of Italy.

EQT Infrastructure plans to invest in the company's network and pursue growth opportunities in areas such as fixed wireless access, IoT, and private networks. This strategic move aims to address the growing demand for robust digital infrastructure, fueled by increasing mobile data traffic, 5G deployment, and emerging technologies.

The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals and is expected to close within six to nine months. EQT Infrastructure is a significant investor in digital infrastructure and aims to leverage its expertise to develop the company's assets and services.
