Equinor and Aker BP are joining forces to target significant oil and gas volumes trapped in low-permeability, or "tight," rock formations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The companies intend to share technology and standardize operational practices to make the extraction of these resources commercially viable.

The Norwegian Offshore Directorate estimates that approximately 2.8 billion barrels of oil equivalent remain in these formations. Historically, the geological complexity of tight reservoirs has made recovery costs prohibitive, limiting production despite the substantial size of the reserves.

By leveraging their combined operational scale, the two companies aim to reduce development costs and improve recovery rates. The collaboration seeks to address long-standing technical hurdles that have prevented these assets from contributing to Norway's overall offshore output.

This partnership marks a shift toward industrial cooperation as the industry faces the challenge of depleting traditional fields. Future development plans will depend on the successful implementation of new extraction technologies and project standardization.
