Eric Schmidt: AI Gap Between U.S. and China Shrinks to Six Months

Speaking at the Masters of Scale summit, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt assessed the ongoing competition in artificial intelligence as the defining geopolitical rivalry of the era. Schmidt revealed that the technological gap between the U.S. and China has narrowed significantly, with China now estimated to be only six months behind the U.S. in AI capabilities.

Schmidt noted that China has effectively countered U.S. chip export restrictions by developing highly efficient algorithms that require less hardware performance and energy. He emphasized that while the U.S. maintains an advantage in capital markets and talent, China’s ability to align national infrastructure strategy—specifically regarding data centers and renewable energy—provides a structural edge.

The U.S. faces significant hurdles in energy infrastructure, which Schmidt identified as a critical bottleneck. He estimated that the country needs to scale up power generation, including nuclear capacity, to meet the massive electricity demands of AI data centers through 2030. The competition, according to Schmidt, has transformed into a high-stakes race with profound long-term implications for global intelligence capabilities.
