Ericsson introduces mobile network drone detection system

Ericsson has unveiled its Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) system, utilizing 5G infrastructure to track low-flying drones without requiring an active network connection.

2 November 2026

Telecom equipment provider Ericsson has launched its Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) system, designed to repurpose mobile network infrastructure for object detection. By analyzing the reflection of radio signals between multiple 5G sites, the system can track drones and other moving objects that are not connected to the network.

The technology aims to address the growing challenge of monitoring low-altitude airspace for security and defense purposes. By integrating sensing capabilities directly into existing 5G towers, the solution offers a cost-effective alternative to deploying widespread dedicated sensor networks. The system provides 3D positioning data, which can be shared with command-and-control software to enhance situational awareness.

Ericsson plans to initiate small-scale pilot programs in 2027, with broader commercial deployments expected in 2028. Testing has been conducted across various international locations, including trials with AT&T in Texas and Erillisverkot in Helsinki, demonstrating the system's ability to maintain track continuity across varying environmental conditions.
