Ericsson to Supply New Network Platform to NTT DOCOMO in Japan

Swedish technology company Ericsson has been selected by Japanese telecommunications operator NTT DOCOMO to supply its next-generation RAN Compute platform for DOCOMO's networks in Japan, including the country's 5G infrastructure.

The platform utilizes Ericsson's latest silicon technology and is optimized to support 4G, 5G, and 5G Advanced networks. It is also designed to enhance artificial intelligence and machine learning workloads within the radio access network. Ericsson states the platform can deliver up to twice the capacity of previous-generation baseband products while consuming less than half the energy.

Deployment of the new platform began in July 2026. It is expected to improve network quality and customer experience for DOCOMO users. The platform also supports network programmability and prepares the network for future traffic increases driven by artificial intelligence.

Ericsson and DOCOMO will also collaborate on developing next-generation network architectures to meet the growing data traffic expected from AI applications. The companies aim to advance network infrastructure that combines higher capacity, lower energy consumption, and AI-readiness for the next phase of mobile communication.
