eSATA connectors emerged in the mid-2000s to address the growing demand for faster data transfer with external storage devices. They extended the SATA standard from an internal connection to an external one, enabling performance that rivaled internal hard drives. This made the connector an attractive option for video editors, IT professionals, and anyone requiring high-performance external storage solutions.
The original eSATA standard delivered data transfer speeds of up to 3 Gbps (SATA II) and later 6 Gbps (SATA III). This represented a significant improvement over contemporary USB 2.0 interfaces, which were limited to 480 Mbps. Unlike USB, eSATA provided a more direct connection to the system's SATA controller, minimizing latency and enhancing performance consistency. The eSATAp variant was later introduced, combining features of both eSATA and USB, and adding power delivery support for external devices.
While the popularity of eSATA connectors has waned with the advent of newer standards like USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt, they remain relevant in certain industrial applications and older systems where speed and stability are paramount. The connectors still require a separate power source (except for eSATAp), and their support for hot-swap functionality depends on the host system's AHCI mode.
