ESPN implements layoffs after NFL Network acquisition
Sports media company ESPN has initiated a significant round of layoffs, the first in three years, following its acquisition of NFL Network. Chairman Jimmy Pitaro cited integration of acquired assets for the workforce reductions.

ESPN is undergoing substantial workforce reductions for the first time in three years, a move directly linked to its April acquisition of NFL Network and related league digital assets. Chairman Jimmy Pitaro informed employees via a memo that the layoffs are primarily a consequence of integrating the newly acquired NFL properties.
The acquisition, announced last August, included NFL Fantasy and distribution rights for the RedZone channel, with the NFL receiving a 10% equity stake in ESPN in return. Government regulators approved the deal in January, and NFL Network employees officially transitioned to ESPN on April 1st. Pitaro stated that the company evaluated its teams and structure to position itself for the future, leading to difficult decisions.
While most affected positions are in production and behind-the-scenes roles, some on-air talent have also been impacted. Analyst Ryan Clark was reportedly informed during a live broadcast. Long-time ESPN personality Karl Ravech and NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero are among those laid off. Clark later posted on social media expressing support for his former colleagues.
These cuts at ESPN are occurring amidst broader restructuring efforts within its parent company, The Walt Disney Company. The NFL Network purchase represents a significant strategic move for ESPN as it integrates the popular football content and associated digital platforms into its existing portfolio.
