The European Spallation Source (ESS) has successfully demonstrated "Plug and Play" functionality for its sample environment equipment, enabling streamlined experimental setups. This development, achieved through cross-team collaboration, ensures that sample environment devices can be connected to neutron instruments automatically and without error.
The demonstration, conducted at ESS's technical workshops using the YMIR testbed, focused on integrating a temperature controller. The system, provided by the Integrated Control System (ICS) division, automatically recognized and configured the equipment upon connection to the network. This automation eliminates the need for manual adjustments and minimizes the potential for errors.
The initiative was a collaborative effort involving the ICS division, the Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) division, and the IT division. Sample environment equipment is crucial for modifying and controlling conditions around a sample, such as temperature and pressure, during experiments.
The goal of this technology is to simplify the integration of all sample environment equipment used across ESS instruments. Future development aims to further enhance reliability and adaptability for upcoming experimental needs.
