EssilorLuxottica and Applied Materials Partner on AR Glasses Optics
Eyewear company EssilorLuxottica and technology firm Applied Materials announced a joint development agreement to advance optics for next-generation smart glasses and augmented reality.

EssilorLuxottica, a global leader in eyewear, and Applied Materials, Inc., a semiconductor equipment manufacturer, have entered into a long-term joint development agreement set to accelerate the commercialization of next-generation intelligent optical systems for augmented reality (AR) and AI-powered smart glasses. The announcement was made on June 16, 2026.
The partnership leverages EssilorLuxottica's expertise in lenses, frames, and smart eyewear with Applied Materials' strengths in materials engineering and waveguide technologies. The goal is to develop lightweight, high-performance optical platforms essential for scalable AR experiences.
Through collaborative research and development, the companies will focus on advanced optical technologies, including waveguides, adaptive lens systems, and materials innovations. These are intended to enable future smart lenses and AR capabilities, while maintaining clear visibility of the real world. Waveguides are identified as a fundamental component for AR devices.
A dedicated collaboration lab at Applied Materials' Silicon Valley campus will house joint research initiatives. This setup aims to speed up the transition of innovations into manufacturable and scalable optical solutions for the burgeoning smart eyewear market.
