EssilorLuxottica and Applied Materials Partner on AR Glasses Optics
EssilorLuxottica and technology firm Applied Materials have announced a joint development agreement to advance optical systems for future smart glasses.

EssilorLuxottica and Applied Materials, Inc. have announced a long-term joint development agreement aimed at accelerating the commercialization of future optical systems for augmented reality (AR) and AI-integrated smart glasses.
The collaboration merges EssilorLuxottica's global leadership in lenses, frames, and smart eyewear with Applied Materials' expertise in materials engineering and waveguide technologies. The objective is to develop lightweight, high-performance optical platforms for the next era of wearables, specifically for AR experiences.
Research and development efforts will focus on advanced optical technologies, including waveguides, active optical modulator systems, and material innovations. These technologies are crucial for enabling transparent lenses that can project digital information into the user's field of view without obstructing the view of the real world.
By leveraging their complementary expertise and intellectual property, the companies aim to speed up the transition from disruptive innovation to large-scale manufacturable optical solutions. This will be facilitated through joint research programs conducted in a dedicated collaborative laboratory at Applied Materials' Silicon Valley campus.
