EssilorLuxottica Launches Varilux Shift Progressive Lenses

EssilorLuxottica, a global leader in the eyewear industry, has launched its latest progressive lens innovation, Varilux Shift. The new lenses integrate expertise in vision science with artificial intelligence to support clear vision across all distances, with a focus on aiding individuals new to progressive eyewear.

The Varilux Shift lenses are designed to address the challenges of early presbyopia, a condition where refocusing between near and far vision becomes more difficult. The design aims to facilitate this transition, helping new presbyopes adapt more smoothly to their changing visual needs during everyday activities.

Featuring the new iComfort technology, Varilux Shift optimizes the near-vision zone based on individual prescriptions and addition levels, aiming for easier and more intuitive adaptation. The lens design is informed by AI analysis of millions of wearer data points, allowing researchers to understand natural eye movements during near tasks. Simulation data suggests a 34% improvement in visual "softness" and an 18% enlargement of the far-vision area compared to standard progressive lenses.

An independent consumer study involving first-time progressive lens wearers reported that 91% adapted to Varilux Shift within four weeks, while 95% incorporated the lenses into their daily routines. The lenses are currently available in the U.S., with expansions planned for Canada, Latin America, and other regions throughout 2026 and 2027.
