EternityX dissects China's fragmented digital media ecosystem

Marketing technology firm EternityX has released a comprehensive analysis of China's digital media landscape, emphasizing its distinct characteristics and challenges compared to Western markets. The report underscores that China's digital terrain is composed of numerous independent platforms, referred to as 'data silos,' which collectively fulfill the roles of Google, Meta, and Amazon in other markets.

A key differentiator from Western markets is the fragmentation of China's media ecosystem. Popular Western platforms such as Google, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter) are blocked in China, rendering Western marketing tools and strategies ineffective. Instead, a proprietary, tightly integrated digital infrastructure operates, where each application, like WeChat, Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok), and Alibaba platforms (Taobao, Tmall), functions as a self-contained ecosystem with its own user bases and marketing opportunities.

According to EternityX, China's media ecosystem is characterized by three main features: data silos, closed platform-specific ecosystems, and the deep integration of content and commerce. This means user identities and data do not transfer between platforms, and the transition from content consumption to purchasing often occurs within the same application. As of late 2025, China had approximately 1.28 billion mobile internet users, spending an average of nearly 8 hours per day on their devices.

The report details major platforms, including WeChat (messaging and services), Douyin (short-form video and live commerce), Taobao/Tmall (e-commerce), Xiaohongshu (lifestyle and social commerce), Weibo (social media and news), and Bilibili (video content and youth culture). EternityX also provides insights into how these platforms integrate into different stages of the customer journey, from communication and content discovery to conversion.

A significant challenge for foreign brands is the fragmented audience data. Because each platform operates as its own silo, the same customer can appear as entirely different individuals across various applications. This complicates the measurement of customer acquisition costs and the construction of unified targeting strategies. EternityX offers solutions for integrating and managing this data through its AI-driven ID Space platform. Furthermore, the report highlights China's constantly evolving regulatory landscape, including requirements for labeling AI-generated content and new regulations for live commerce that took effect in early 2025 and 2026, respectively.
