Etsy mandates authentic product imagery to restrict AI-generated listings

Etsy is implementing stricter documentation requirements for sellers as it attempts to curb the prevalence of automated and AI-generated content. Under the new policy, each product listing must feature at least one unedited photograph of the item against a real-world background to ensure shoppers receive an accurate representation of the goods.

The platform stated that buyer feedback indicates significant confusion regarding the origin and nature of items sold on the site. Many sellers have also voiced concerns that their handmade goods are being overshadowed or incorrectly associated with AI-generated listings that do not accurately reflect the final product delivered to the customer.

While secondary images in a listing may still be edited, the primary photo requirement aims to establish transparency and trust. These adjustments come as online marketplaces face increasing pressure to address the volume of low-quality or deceptive AI-generated inventory that threatens the integrity of platforms centered on artisan and vintage goods.
