EU Adopts AI Act: New Regulations and Implications for Businesses

The European Union has adopted the first global regulatory framework for artificial intelligence, known as the AI Act. The new law will be implemented gradually, aiming to establish a safe and reliable environment for the development and deployment of AI systems within the Union.

The legislation categorizes AI applications into four risk levels: unacceptable, high, low, and minimal risk. The strictest regulations apply to high-risk systems, used in areas such as critical infrastructures, education, or employment. These systems require rigorous risk management and registration in an EU database before market entry.

AI applications deemed an unacceptable risk, which could lead to exploitation or social manipulation, are prohibited. Low-risk systems, like chatbots, must comply with transparency obligations, ensuring users are aware they are interacting with AI. Minimal risk AI systems, such as spam filters, do not require specific regulatory measures.

The AI Act is expected to significantly impact businesses developing or utilizing AI. It may introduce additional costs and investment needs to meet new requirements. Simultaneously, the law aims to provide a clear legal framework that can foster innovation and create new business opportunities for developers of safe and trustworthy AI solutions. Companies must familiarize themselves with the new rules to ensure compliance.
