EU-Africa Summit Falls Short, Welthungerhilfe Argues

The global aid organization Welthungerhilfe has voiced criticism regarding the results of the recent EU-Africa Summit, asserting that the meeting did not yield sufficient outcomes and left many crucial issues unresolved.

Welthungerhilfe specifically highlights the absence of concrete commitments for the future of African youth. With a young and rapidly growing population, the continent's development hinges on creating educational opportunities, employment, and jobs. The organization points out that Africa remains largely a supplier of raw materials, with value creation happening elsewhere. Combating poverty and hunger requires strengthening local smallholder farmers and young entrepreneurs, ensuring their access to finance and markets.

The organization also expresses skepticism towards the EU's new European Fund for Sustainable Development, designed to leverage private investment in Africa. While theoretically promising, Welthungerhilfe notes that the strategic partnership between the EU and Africa has not delivered desired results over the past decade. A fundamental shift in political thinking was absent once again.

Furthermore, Welthungerhilfe raises concerns that increasing the role of the private sector in development cooperation risks marginalizing citizens' rights. Investments should benefit local micro-enterprises and boost employment in the informal sector, which constitutes the majority of jobs in Africa. It is crucial to ensure that corporate activities do not undermine human rights or environmental standards.

The summit also failed to address the unfair trade agreements between the EU and Africa, despite prior announcements. Welthungerhilfe argues that these agreements function as a neoliberal power tool, destroying local markets and leading to the loss of vital employment.
