European models of the upcoming Apple iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will not feature user-replaceable batteries, as they qualify for an exemption under new EU regulations set to take effect in 2027. The rules mandate that smartphones sold in the European Union allow consumers to easily replace batteries using common tools.

The EU regulation, specifically Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1670, aims to enhance device repairability and sustainability. However, it includes specific clauses that allow high-end devices to retain non-removable batteries if they meet stringent performance and durability criteria.

To be eligible for this exemption, device batteries must maintain at least 83% of their original capacity after 500 full charge cycles and 80% after 1000 cycles. Additionally, the device must achieve a minimum Ingress Protection rating of IP67 for dust and water resistance.

Apple's current iPhone models reportedly meet or exceed these requirements. Consequently, European versions of the iPhone 18 Pro are not expected to comply with the open battery design mandate. Battery replacements for these devices will continue to be facilitated through Apple's authorized repair network or its Self Repair Program.
