EU Commission Preliminarily Flags Meta Over Feed Practices
The European Commission has issued a preliminary assessment indicating Meta may be in breach of the Digital Services Act (DSA) regarding its social media feed operations.

The European Commission has informed Meta Platforms of a preliminary assessment concerning the company's social media platform policies. This notification is part of a broader inquiry into Meta for alleged breaches of the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA).
According to the Commission's preliminary assessment, Meta may be violating the DSA through the design of its algorithmic feeds, such as news feeds. Specifically, the Commission is investigating whether Meta prevents users in the European Union from choosing content for Facebook and Instagram without advertisements. Meta has been asked to provide evidence of compliance.
Meta Platforms has until February 16 to report to the Commission and until March 1 to provide more detailed responses to the concerns. If the Commission deems Meta's responses insufficient, it may open a formal investigation.
The Digital Services Act (DSA) came into effect in November 2022 and aims to regulate online content and behavior, increase transparency and safety, and protect users online. This marks the first time the Commission has issued a preliminary assessment under the DSA.
