EU Expands IRIS² Satellite Internet Network to 348 Satellites
The European Commission has signed an implementation agreement for the IRIS² satellite internet network. The network will comprise 348 satellites, with the first launches targeted before 2029.
The European Commission has finalized negotiations and signed an implementation agreement with the SpaceRISE consortium for its flagship IRIS² satellite constellation. This project aims to bolster Europe's digital independence by offering reliable satellite-based communication connectivity to governments, businesses, and individuals.
The IRIS² network will ultimately consist of 348 satellites. Of these, 330 will be deployed in low Earth orbit (LEO) and 18 in medium Earth orbit (MEO). The addition of 66 satellites in LEO is intended to enhance the system's capabilities for defense, security, and emergency services.
IRIS² is a collaborative effort involving EU member states, Norway, and Iceland. The goal is to establish a resilient and secure communication infrastructure. Initial satellite launches are scheduled to occur before 2029, indicating an ambitious timeline for the project's rollout.
