EU Implements Real-Time Euro Payments and IBAN Matching

As of January 9, 2025, banks and savings banks throughout the EU are required to enable the receipt of instant euro transfers. Starting in October 2025, they must also offer the capability to send payments in real-time. These regulatory changes aim to streamline and secure financial transactions across the Eurozone.

For consumers, this means that instant transfers will reach the recipient within 10 seconds, operating 24/7 throughout the year. The fees associated with these real-time payments are capped at the same level as standard bank transfers.

Furthermore, all transfers, whether instant or regular, will now undergo an IBAN matching process. Before a payment is executed, the payer's bank will verify if the recipient's name corresponds with the provided IBAN. If a mismatch is detected, the payer receives a warning and can choose whether to proceed or cancel the transaction. This verification is designed to be completed within a maximum of five seconds, acting as a safeguard against typos and fraudulent activities.

The IBAN matching works by the payer's bank sending a query to the recipient's financial institution. The recipient's bank then confirms a match, a non-match, or a partial match. This additional layer of security significantly increases the reliability of money transfers and empowers payers to identify potential errors before finalizing the transaction.
