EU Mandates Charging Stations Every 60 Kilometers on Major Roads

The European Parliament has decided to expand the charging infrastructure for electric cars throughout the EU. Under the new legislation, public charging stations must be available at least every 60 kilometers along major transport corridors in the European Union by 2026.

The law also sets requirements for payment methods and pricing at charging stations, stipulating that card payments must be possible. This decision aims to facilitate easier electric car usage for travel within the EU and alleviate concerns about the coverage and accessibility of charging networks.

In Germany, the number of charging points has increased significantly. As of July 2023, there were nearly 100,000 charging points, an increase of 13,000 from the previous year. The rollout of fast-charging stations has been particularly successful, with over 18,500 now available.

ADAC emphasizes that the expansion of the charging network alone is insufficient. The organization highlights the need for more public charging options in urban areas, especially in residential districts where street parking is common. Challenges also remain in larger housing cooperatives regarding the provision of charging facilities.
