EU Parliament Approves Extension for Scanning Private Messages

The European Parliament has voted to extend legislation that permits tech companies to scan users' private messages for child sexual abuse material. This decision was made even though a majority of lawmakers voted against the proposal.

The renewed legislation allows firms including Meta, Google, and Microsoft to scan private text messages, emails, and social media communications. Critics have nicknamed the bill "Chat Control." End-to-end encrypted services, such as WhatsApp and Signal, remain exempt.

The European People's Party (EPP), the largest political group, has advocated for reinstating the legal basis for tech companies to scan messages. They argue that the firms' voluntary detection efforts have aided in identifying and rescuing child victims of online sexual abuse.

However, the move has faced strong opposition from other parties and privacy advocates concerned about its implications. European Digital Rights stated that the legislation could allow private companies to deny users the right to confidential digital conversations. The allowance for scanning is set to continue until 2028, unless a permanent legislative solution is established before then.
