The European Union has updated and strengthened regulations concerning the rights of air passengers. These new provisions ensure that travelers receive appropriate compensation and assistance in cases of flight cancellations, significant delays, or denied boarding.

In situations where a flight is canceled or a passenger is denied boarding, the operating airline must provide financial compensation and care. This applies provided the passenger checked in on time. These rights extend to all flights, including charter flights, departing from an EU airport or arriving in the EU operated by an EU carrier. Passengers have the right to choose between a refund of the ticket price (and, if necessary, a return flight to the point of departure) or alternative transport to their destination.

If an airline does not have enough seats for its passengers, it must first ask if passengers are willing to voluntarily give up their seats in exchange for compensation. If a passenger is denied boarding, the airline must pay compensation ranging from €250 for shorter flights (under 1,500 km) to €600 for longer flights (over 3,500 km). This compensation can be halved if the delay at the final destination is less than a specified duration. The airline must also offer meals, drinks, and if necessary, accommodation.

For significant delays, defined as exceeding 2 to 4 hours depending on the flight distance, airlines must provide passengers with meals, drinks, and accommodation. If the delay reaches 5 hours or more, passengers are also entitled to a refund of their ticket price and a return flight to their original departure point. In cases of damage, destruction, loss, or delay of baggage on flights operated by EU carriers, passengers can claim up to 1,000 Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) globally. For injury or death resulting from an accident during air transport, passengers may be entitled to compensation worldwide.
